Le Musée de Vankleek Hill a été créé afin de collecter, préserver, rechercher, exposer et interpréter des objets qui illustrent au mieux la fondation, la colonisation et le développement de la ville de Vankleek Hill et de ses environs immédiats, de 1797 à aujourd’hui, avec un accent particulier sur la période de 1797 à 1920.
Pour atteindre cet objectif, notre musée est centré sur le thème d’un magasin général du XIXe siècle, servant de moyen d’interprétation de l’histoire locale de notre communauté. Ce choix s’harmonise avec le bâtiment qui abrite le musée, un magasin général datant de 1834.

La Tour d’observation Higginson représente les nombreuses contributions positives du lieutenant-colonel Thomas Higginson, un émigrant irlandais du comté d’Antrim, en Irlande, qui quitta son pays pour le Canada en 1819 et s’établit à Vankleek Hill en 1829.
La Tour d’observation Higginson fut d’abord construite par M. Thomas Higginson (1794-1884) vers 1830 en tant que moulin à vent destiné à moudre le blé et le maïs afin de favoriser le développement commercial de Vankleek Hill et de ses environs. Cependant, ce projet échoua en raison du manque de vent constant. M. Thomas Higginson, qui fut nommé lieutenant dans le régiment de Prescott le 23 avril 1839, est ensuite reconnu pour avoir transformé ce moulin à vent en « premier observatoire privé de l’Est de l’Ontario ».
